There Were These People is a collection of things I wrote while drifting around a lot over the course of three years, taking a lot of walks, talking to a lot of strangers and spending a lot of time alone. Most of the writings began as journal entries. Some of them stayed that way. Others became essays. Others became short stories. A few of them became journalistic pieces. Many of them became hybrids of all of these things. I don’t really know what to call them, so I’ll just call them stories. Most of the stories are true. The only one that’s not is “American Colonialism,” which is technically fiction but can more accurately be called a five-part mostly-true story about some imaginary people I both know and invented. The title of the book comes from a misremembered line from the film Paris, Texas. — Brian
